One Month Outtakes

21 January 2013

Friends and family and social networkers saw the meatball’s one-month pic last week. Here are a few shots that came in close second places.

The first one is the one we actually used.

The second is from my first attempt. He had been quiet and calm all morning and early afternoon. As soon as I was ready to put him in the chair, of course, he decided he was starving. I took a couple of him screaming because it’s still kind of cute.

The rest are from about an hour later, after he’d eaten and been denied his milk-coma. I hoped he’d stay asleep in the chair, but he did not. “The Cranky Face” is the first, chronologically, in that series.

Twas Yesterday Morning

Post Pic

Twas yesterday morning and all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The socks were all flung in the corner with care,
In hopes that I wouldn’t get mad they were there.

The baby was nestled, all snug in our bed,
While visions of who-knows-what danced in his head.
And I in my PJ’s without a nightcap,
Was just waking up from a long winter’s nap.

When, looking around, I saw we were alone,
I sprang from the bed to grab my iPhone.
Across to the nightstand I flew like a flash,
I stumbled, it tumbled all down with a crash.  Read more…

The Day I Almost Died

16 January 2013

Post Pic

Yesterday morning I was still up because our little meatball didn’t feel like sleeping much that night. He just ate, and ate, and ate.

Husband got up and got off to work, and we just laid in bed – eating and fussing and changing diapers and staring at each other. As we laid there – me trying to sleep through his quiet moments and him staring longingly at the ceiling fan – he started to squirm. Then he started to fuss. Then he squirmed faster.

Then, laying flat on his back with his button nose aimed straight up at the light, he opened wide and an absolute torrent of spit-up erupted from his face. This was not a trickle down the side of the face. It was not a mouth-full that spilled over. This was a geyser – a natural wonder, of sorts. It rose – majestically, almost – several inches above his little visage before crashing down all over his cheek, his left ear, the side of his head, and the bed sheets in a six-inch radius of the epicenter.

“Dear Lord!” I reached for the nearest burp cloth and started wiping his head and chest, and cleaning out his ear. One burp cloth expired, I grabbed another one (there are two by the bed every night) and started sopping up the puddles around us.  Read more…

How To Pacify An Infant – Or Not

15 January 2013

Post Pic

Pacifier. Nuk. Binky. (Husband has some weird term for it that he swears is legit, but sounds totally made up to me.)

Our little meatball is hardly a month old (Already! Seriously. I don’t know if I can handle this pace.) and I’m ashamed to admit how much time and energy I spend thinking about a piece of plastic and rubber small enough to fit in my pocket.

Parents, I want your input.  Read more…

White Chicken Chili

11 January 2013

Post Pic PinterestHusband does the cooking ’round these parts, but if there’s one kitchen appliance I love  – well, it’s my stand mixer. But if there are two that I love, the other one is the slow-cooker.

Because sometimes Husband works late. Sometimes all of the pots and pans are dirty from the meal he made the previous evening. (Seriously – all) Sometimes it’s just nice to get to the end of the day and not have to think about one more thing.

Ode to the slow-cooker

This is one of my favorites. I got it from my mom years ago, and now I’m passing it on to you. You’re welcome.

There’s this new fad I’m seeing online about slow-cooker recipes that are “clean” and “healthy” and don’t use cream-of-something soups. This isn’t one of those. What this is, however, is super easy, super yummy, and pretty stinkin’ cheap. (I usually clock this one at under $20.)
