Don’t Miss This

I swear he’s at his cutest early in the morning – sleeping peacefully, arms at perfect right angles on either side of his perfect face. He’s at his cutest early in the morning when it’s too dark in the bedroom for my iPhone camera to register anything at all.

So there are no photos, no pixelated memories to call up decades from now.

And that concerns me, so I laid awake very early yesterday morning and watched him sleep.

I rubbed his fuzzy head ever so gently, with just the tips of my fingers. I traced every curve of his chubby face and rolling chins with my eyes, and I recalled the soft touch of his new skin.

I counted the pimples still clinging to his cheeks, and I matched his breath for a few quick moments.

My eyes started to close, but he squeaked and wiggled a bit to remind me what I was doing. Studying. Trying to etch every perfect detail in my brain so that I’d never forget him at almost-three-months-old in the bedroom that’s too dark to photograph.  Read more…

Our Weekend – Innovation and Love

He’s been doing this thing that we choose to interpret as “kisses.”

Because, lately, if I ask for kisses, and lean in to peck his cheek, he opens wide and turns his head to press his lips against my face. I pretty much love it.

Saturday morning, we were being a lazy little family in bed. The Meatball was stirring, and his left hand found my face during his morning wake-up stretches. He clenched my cheek, like he usually does, and I explained, “You found Mommy’s face!”

All at once his eyes opened, he turned toward me, and he rolled himself onto his side to plant a big, sloppy open mouth on my face.

The last little piece of my heart melted.

Maybe he was just trying to eat me, but I don’t care. I’m calling it love. Zombie-baby-love, maybe, but so be it.

Meatball and his “brown auntie,” as she calls herself, had some bonding time.

And in an effort to trick him out of pooping in the bathtub, we thought we’d warm up his butt in the sink. Didn’t work. He’s morally opposed to pooping in the sink.

March - Bath

And then we hung with Mister Jeff (pronounced, “Misser Jeff”) for his birthday, and found a nice little arm rest in the process. Too cool for school

Chicken Mole

This is definitely more work than I generally accept from a slow cooker recipe, but, well first of all, it’s from Martha and the woman is kind of an over-achiever like that. And the “dark chocolate” part caught my attention. And Husband likes spicy chocolate and Mexican food, and so I stepped outside my throw-everything-in-the-pot-and-go comfort zone to try it.

It’s delicious.

And there were leftovers, as always, and we ended up feeding the leftovers to some real Mexicans (who said it was good, but I don’t know if I believe them). One of those Mexicans was, thus, inspired to make us some mole, “the way mom makes it,” (i.e. no chocolate and much spicier) so we could try it.

Any meal that yields – even in a weird round-about way – authentic Mexican food “the way mom makes it,” is a winner in my book. So while I can’t guarantee those results … try sharing this with your Mexican friends and maybe they’ll take pity on you and bring you real Mexican food too. Worth a shot.

If they don’t, this is still pretty delicious. Recipe after the break.  Read more…

Caption Please: Baby Talk

6 March 2013

We went to visit our friends a couple days ago. The mommies had coffee. The babies had boobies. It was a nice morning, and the boys actually – kind of – hung out for a minute.

So this is pretty cute, but it’s dying for a caption. Help us out in the comments!

What is going on in those cute little heads?

A couple weeks ago I mentioned our little visit to the winter farmer’s market, and the man with the magical honey. I got lots of comments and inquiries about that man and his magical honey, so I went back and got you some.

Well, one of you.

One lucky reader will have their very own magical honey this weekend. Could it be you?

Leave a comment and tell us about something sweet in your life these days – your favorite cookies, romance, a job promotion, a new baby – whatever! Whatever is the bee’s knees in your world right now … (Too many puns? I’ll stop.) Random.org will select a winner Friday afternoon.
