My 30th Birthday Campaign
It’s happening.
I’m turning 30.
September 14.
I thought about – talked about – throwing a big, blow-out party, but then I thought we could do better than that.
(Okay, and I don’t have the time/energy for a big party, and someone told me ’80s-themed parties are a thing these days – which totally killed it for me, and I don’t want to clean my house just so you can all come over and mess it up. There, I said it. The fact remains that we can do better than that.)
So in lieu of dressing up like a character from The Breakfast Club (not that you can’t still do that, I guess … send me a picture if you do), or bringing cupcakes, or Facebooking me a Starbucks gift card –
I want water.
It costs $6000 to fund an entire well that will provide an entire village with clean water.
That’s a huge project though, and more than I don’t want scores of people trying to use our one little restroom for my birthday, I don’t want a buzz-kill for my birthday either. This is the 3-0, after all. I’m fighting buzz-kill as it is.
Then I thought, “Half of a well?” $3000 is $30 from ________ people. Right.
Still kind of risky, though, and while I’m all about BHAGs … did I mention I’m turning 30? No one needs a disappointing 30th birthday. Or maybe I’m just getting old and afraid of risk and adventure. Someone get me a recliner and turn on Wheel of Fortune, and we’ll call it a day …
Let’s just stick with the 30 thing.
30 gifts of $30 for my 30th birthday will provide 45 people (messed up my “30 thing,” but whatever) safe, clean drinking water for the rest of their lives. That’s pretty cool. That’s a birthday well-spent.
AND the September campaign this year is India.
You guys. I’m in love with India. No joke. Ask Husband – I miss it. I daydream about going back. Sometimes I talk about moving there.
Clean water for India. Happy birthday to me. You can donate here.
