Our Impossible Adoption Story
If you're looking for the unbelievable account of how "impossible" became "done" in 5 business days, start here.
And The Winner Is … !

Once upon a time we started a little office pool based on my then-unborn child … and fueled by my momentary craving for a good cuppa joe.
Well the results are in, and the prizes dispatched, so check your Inboxes, Natalie and Nancy, you’re our big winners!
Natalie guessed Niah would show up December 12, and wins for closest estimated due date. Although I appreciate all the sentiment in earlier guesses.
Nancy was only one ounce over in her guess of 7 pounds, 6 ounces.
Congrats to you, ladies. Thanks to everyone for playing along at home!
Update
Hey all. Just a quick update from my phone.
Our little man has entered the world! Samuel Hananiah was born early Monday morning. He was 7 lbs, 5 oz and 21 inches long!
Bigger. Than I. Expected. o.O
You know the whole story will be coming at ya pretty soon. In the meantime, I just wanted to check in and let you know I have not abandoned Spits and Wiggles. (Just the opposite, in a way.)
Everyone is healthy and strong and recovering well! (I’m recovering, the rest of them are fine) Stay posted! (Enter your email address on the sidebar, there, to make sure you get updates.)
The Inner Monologue of a Cranky Pregnant Woman
I backwards-crawled out of bed nine times between Thursday night and Friday morning. Nine. Times.
Friday morning, as I leave for the clinic at 8:20 AM, I am tired. I kiss Husband’s sleepy head and tell him I’ll be back in an hour – tops.
After an invigorating drive in the morning commute I roll into the parking lot at exactly 8:45 AM, no more inclined to be perky and cheerful. But I know how this will go, I’ve been doing this every week for over a month now, so I waddle in the sliding door and stand by the sign to check in.
And stand
And stand
There is, apparently, only one desk open on Friday mornings – out of a possible eight. The young woman behind it is talking to, and filling out paperwork for, a gentleman sitting in my seat.
And talking to
And filling out
Why is he here anyway? There is no small child with him. He’s clearly not pregnant. Is he in the right place? This is the VNA, and I have no idea what that stands for, but I’m pretty sure the V is for “vagina.” Read more…
Christmas Is For Traditions
Ours is called the Ornament Party.
And, like all good traditions, it has its story.
We got married in October, and I think we kind of skipped a lot of Christmas that year. I think it started the following Christmas.
Either way, it was the first time we had a Christmas tree in our little studio apartment. We went to a tree farm, and found the most pathetic, dilapidated evergreen we could find, and brought it home.
Christmas is about redemption.
Sitting at the little, two-person cafe diner table in the corner of the kitchen suddenly felt like camping, but I didn’t care (can’t say the same for Husband, but he’s good to me). We had our first Christmas tree.
But we had nothing to put on it, obviously, and a box of color-themed ornaments just seemed shameful. Here we had this real life Charlie Brown tree, it needed us, and we were going to placate it with lame ornaments? Couldn’t do it. We got a strand of lights and went home to formulate Plan B. New Christmas Music
One of my favorite things about the Christmas season is the music.
Because on the one hand, you have some really great hymns that only come out for one month each year. I love hymns because they’re tested. The ones that are being sung decades, if not a century, later use gorgeous music and great lyrics; they’ve stood the test of time.
Then there’s the modern, religious Christmas music. Some of which is an abomination, but some of which is beautiful and inspirational and hymn-ish in the making.
Even the not-religious Christmas music is mostly cheery and catchy, and just makes you feel good. (Some of it makes me never want to travel south of Illinois ever again. And some of it makes me never want to buy shoes in December, but most of it is delightful.) Read more…
